Dynamic Viscoelastic Determination of PET - Effect of Thermal History

1.Brief introduction
Due to influence of thermal history, various properties of polymers will change, especially thermal properties of crystalline polymers. Thermal history of polymer is affected by various factors such as preparation process, storage conditions, and usage environment. Usually, thermal history of materials is studied by thermal analysis and viscoelasticity measurement.
This paper introduces a case, in which PET has different viscoelastic properties due to different thermal history.

2. Experiment
The sample used this time was an extruded 0.5mm-thickness PET sheet. First, the sample was heated up for the first time until the cold crystallization process was completed, then cooled down slowly, and then heated up for the second time until the sample was about to but did not melt.
Instruments: SDM 5600H Rheological workstation and DMS 200 dynamic thermomechanical instrument.
Deformation mode: stretching.
Measurement frequency: 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 Hz;
Temperature program: first heating 150~200 ℃, second heating 150~250 ℃, heating rate 1℃/min, thermal analysis crucibles.

3. Measurement results
Fig.1 is viscoelastic curve of PET at the first temperature rise. This curve shows the E', E" and tanδ curves measured when temperature and frequency of the sample change simultaneously. It can be observed from the first heating curve (Figure 1) that, Alpha phase transition and Beta phase transition occurred near 80~90℃ and -150~20℃ respectively. Among them, Alpha phase transition belongs to glass transition and Beta phase transition belongs to local relaxation. In addition, it can also be observed that the peaks on the curves of E" and tanδ with the increase of E' near 120~140℃. Since PET is processed and formed by rapid cooling in the molten state, there are a lot of amorphous crystals, and the phase change peak at around 120~140 ℃ during the first heating process is cold crystallization of the amorphous part.

Fig.2 is a viscoelasticity curve of the second temperature rise. Fig.3 is the E' and tanδ curves for the first and second temperature rise. In fig.2 and fig.3, Alpha phase change and Beta phase change in the second heating process can be observed, but the cold crystallization process similar to that in the first heating process can not be observed. Since in the first heating process, sample was heated up until the cold crystallization process completed and then cooled slowly, so cold crystallization in the second heating process did not appear. Since the sample is cooled to a glassy state, the part where cold crystallization occurs will still show a crystalline state.

4. Summary
In this paper, influence of thermal history on PET dynamic viscoelastic properties, especially the difference between the cold crystallization phenomenon in the first and second heating curves is studied.

What is silicon carbide whiskers and its application

Silicon carbide whiskers are a kind of single-crystal fiber with a certain length-to-diameter ratio, which has very good high temperature resistance and high strength. It is mainly used in toughening applications where high temperature and high strength applications are required. Such as: aerospace materials, high-speed cutting tools. At present, it has a very high performance-price ratio. Silicon carbide whiskers are cubic whiskers, and diamonds belong to a crystal form. They are the whiskers with the highest hardness, the largest modulus, the highest tensile strength and the highest heat resistance temperature. It is both α-type and β-type, in which β-type performance is better than α-type and has higher hardness (Mohs hardness of 9.5 or more), better toughness and electrical conductivity, anti-wear, high temperature resistance, especially earthquake resistance Corrosion-resistant, radiation-resistant, has been applied to aircraft, missile casings and engines, high-temperature turbi...

What is boron nitride coating and how to use it?

Product Characteristics Environment Friendly: Boron nitride is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, non-polluting Chemical Properties:  Strong non-stick properties in high temperature environment, stability in high temperature Physical Properties: Electrical insulator, low dielectric constant, good thermal conductivity and high lubricity Product Features: Special formula, water-based, easy to use, long-acting formula This type of coating is suitable for all kinds of release agents which need to be operated at high temperature (the product can withstand high temperature of 2800 C). For example, glass industry, metal welding industry, etc., can effectively lubricate and isolate the interface, which can make the processing more smoothly. Sintering of metal and ceramic powders is usually carried out on graphite plate. After coated with boron nitride coating on graphite, the pollution, reaction and bonding phenomena of carbon on sintered parts which may ...

We have already used titanium dioxide powder in our lives.

Titanium is a chemical element, chemical symbol Ti, atomic number 22, located in the fourth cycle of the chemical periodic table, group IVB. It is a silver-white transition metal characterized by light weight, high strength, metallic luster and resistance to wet chlorine gas. The most common compound of titanium is titanium dioxide, which can be used to make white pigments. In the past, people used to mine titanium ore, the main purpose is to obtain titanium dioxide. 1.The nature of titanium dioxide Titanium dioxide (chemical formula: TiO2) is a white or bulk amphoteric oxide with a molecular weight of 79.83. Titanium dioxide is a compound of titanium, a pure substance composed of two or more elements (different from elemental matter). A compound has certain properties, different from the elements or ions it contains, and other compounds. Properties of crystal form: TiO2 has three main crystal forms such as rutile type, anatase type and plate titanium type. Optical properties: Since T...
